Write

Writing our thoughts and feelings about what the author is saying to each of us personally is a very important part of discovering our racist thoughts and feelings. In our writings we answer this question. “what are the author’s words saying to me?”

Sometimes it will be the history of how race was used to pit one group of people against another. To proclaim that one group is superior and another group, inferior. This is the intellectual work we need to do.

At other times it will be the author’s own experience with race in his or her life. Racist experiences we read in order to emotionally feel how racism has affected the writer and how that experience affects us. This is the emotional and psychological work we need to do.

Discovering that we White people cannot be fully human until we come to terms with our racism.
